Hoy os traemos una entrevista muy especial a una autora internacional, María Nikolai, autora de la saga «La mansion de los chocolates» que podéis encontrar publicada por Ediciones Maeva. Esta entrevista es bilingüe inglés para que veais su respuesta real y la traducción.
BIOGRAFÍA
Nacido: 16.02.1968 en Hechingen (cerca del conocido castillo HOHENZOLLERN)
Crecí en Metzingen (conocida como Outlet-City )
Titulación Abitur en 1987, estudios de economía con maestría. (sistema educativo alemán)
Publicado por primera vez en 2007 (non-fiction), seguido de varios libros históricos de no ficción, ahora disponibles en muchas bibliotecas importantes de todo el mundo (por ejemplo, la Universidad de Princeton, Nueva Jersey, Cambridge, Londres, París…)
Primer bestseller: DIE SCHOKOLADENVILLA en 2018. Seguido de las partes 2 y 3 (2019, 2020) (La mansión de los chocolates) y DIE BODENSEE-SAGA (2021, 2022, 2023) (El lago Constanza) aún no traducido al castellano.
Traducido a varios idiomas: español, italiano, checo, húngaro, ruso, holandés y francés. Todas las novelas alemanas llegaron a la Spiegel-Bestellerliste en Alemania, que es la clasificación más importante para los libros alemanes.

¿Por qué te gusta escribir? / Why do you like to write?
EN: Writing books is like travelling within your mind – without limits. It is a phantastic world and you are the creator. All your wishes, hopes, sorrows, love and interests melt together in the Story you write.
ES: Escribir libros es como viajar dentro de tu mente, sin límites. Es un mundo fantástico y tú eres el creador. Todos tus deseos, esperanzas, tristezas, amor e intereses se funden en la Historia que escribes.
¿Cómo consideras que fue el proceso de mandar tus novelas a editoriales? ¿Mandaste tus novelas a varias editoriales o siempre a la misma? / How do you think the process of sending your novels to publishers was? Did you send your novels to several publishers or always to the same one?
EN: I sent the “Schokoladenvilla” to a literary agency. They looked for a Publisher, who gave the book the best chance to get a Bestseller. Since then, I publish at PENGUIN-VERLAG (belonging to Random-House, Munich) In Germany it is not easy to get get publisher contracts (with famous Publishers) without an agent. But the way is not for every author the same. Look at booktok – many writers in the Genres new adult oder Fantasy get a chance on the market, because they are hiped on the platform.
ES: Envié “La Mansión de los chocolates” a una agencia literaria. Buscaron un editor que le diera al libro la mejor oportunidad de convertirse en un éxito de ventas. Desde entonces publico en PENGUIN-VERLAG (perteneciente a Random-House, Munich). En Alemania no es fácil conseguir contratos de editorial (con editoriales famosas) sin un agente. Pero el camino no es igual para todos los autores. Miré booktok: muchos escritores de los géneros New Adult o Fantasy tienen una oportunidad en el mercado porque están en la plataforma.
¿Qué tipo de libros prefieres leer, la trama? ¿Y escribir? / What kind of books do you prefer to read, the plot? And write?
EN: I prefer biographical books or historical books, mostly non-fiction, to get enough historic information for my own writing. But I read a lot all my live long. Mostly historical fiction and love stories. I don’t like crime, Thriller and Horror. Until now I only wrote history books with strong female characters, a beautiful, touching love story, real historical background, tension and – a lot of cooking and baking.
ES: Prefiero libros biográficos o históricos, en su mayoría de no ficción, para obtener suficiente información histórica para mis propios escritos. Pero he leído mucho durante toda mi vida. Principalmente ficción histórica e historias de amor. No me gusta el crimen, el Thriller y el Terror. Hasta ahora sólo escribí libros de historia con personajes femeninos fuertes, una hermosa y conmovedora historia de amor, un trasfondo histórico real, tensión y mucha cocina y repostería.
¿Antes de empezar a escribir habías pensado en esta posibilidad, en ser escritora? / Before starting to write, had you thought about this possibility, about being a writer?
EN: It was a dream, all my life long. That it came true is one of my “life-miracles“
ES: Fue un sueño, toda mi vida. Que se haya hecho realidad es uno de mis «milagros de vida»
¿Compaginas tu trabajo de escritora con otro tipo de trabajo? / Do you combine your work as a writer with other types of work?
EN: Not any more. Since 2019 I only work as a writer.
ES: Ya no. Desde 2019 solo trabajo como escritor.
¿A base de que surgió tu inspiración para escribir novelas? ¿Qué te motivó? / What inspired you to write novels? What motivated you?
EN: A lot of ideas, fantasy, creative and inspiring moments or lectures. Everything in your live may become an inspiration. At least, the inspiration was there from the moment I read my first book, I think at the age of 5 or 6.
ES: Muchas ideas, fantasía, momentos o conferencias creativas e inspiradoras. Todo en tu vida puede convertirse en una inspiración. Al menos la inspiración estuvo ahí desde el momento en que leí mi primer libro, creo que a los 5 o 6 años.
¿Dónde prefieres escribir? ¿Tienes un lugar favorito para hacerlo? / Where do you prefer to write? Do you have a favorite place to do it?
EN: I change my writing places. There are different stages in the process of writing a book – Research, plotting, the writing process as itself, social media etc. The writing-process mostly takes place in my working room at home. The rest I often do in a Café. There are people around, but they do not disturb me. At home there is my beautiful and lively family, that is a loving support.
ES: Cambio mis lugares de escritura. Hay diferentes etapas en el proceso de escribir un libro: investigación, trama, el proceso de escritura en sí, redes sociales, etc. El proceso de escritura se lleva a cabo principalmente en mi sala de trabajo en casa. El resto lo hago a menudo en una cafetería. Hay gente alrededor, pero no me molestan. En casa está mi hermosa y animada familia, que es un cariñoso apoyo.
¿Los protagonistas son personas reales o inventados? ¿En qué te inspiras? / Are the protagonists real people or invented? What are you inspired by?
EN: In my novels there are always real historical persons invented, but not as main characters. Nevertheless they have a strong impact on the story and the main characters. Some of those pass by by while reading Research-literatures. Others need to be intensely researched to fit in the plot.
ES: En mis novelas siempre hay personajes históricos reales inventados, pero no como personajes principales. Sin embargo, tienen un fuerte impacto en la historia y los personajes principales. Algunos de ellos pasan mientras leo literatura de investigación. Otros necesitan ser investigados intensamente para que encajen en la trama.
¿Para qué público está enfocado lo que escribes? / For what audience is what you write focused?
EN: The main audience is female, from their Twenties on, with a Focus of the group between 35 and 80. But there are also some intense male readers, who enjoy the books very much.
ES: El público principal es femenino, a partir de los veinte años, con un foco del grupo entre 35 y 80 años. Pero también hay algunos lectores masculinos intensos, que disfrutan mucho de los libros.
¿Usas mucho las redes sociales para hablar de tus novelas? ¿Cuáles usas y cuál te gusta más? / Do you use social networks a lot to talk about your novels? Which ones do you use and which one do you like the most?
EN: I think for a writer it is necessary to be present on social media. At the Moment I use Instagram and Facebook. I started an Tik Tok account (booktok) but I am still learning the rules of those fast-made Videos and the way the message is receipted.
ES: Uso Instagram, Twitter y Facebook y creo que me voy a hacer Tik Tok. Ahora mismo con la que más disfruto es Instagram.
